What Is Pearlescent Paint? The Secret to Walls That Shift with the Light

What is pearlescent paint and how is it applied? Compare Pearl, Metalico, Metalico Soft and Palace: texture, coverage and drying time for light-shifting walls.

What Is Pearlescent Paint? The Secret to Walls That Shift with the Light

Short answer: Pearlescent paint is a decorative interior paint with added pearl pigments that reflect light, giving walls a lustrous, pearl-like finish that shifts as your viewing angle changes. Silkcoat's pearlescent paints (Pearl, Metalico, Metalico Soft and Palace) are pure acrylic and water-based; what sets them apart is texture, application tool and number of coats.

What is pearlescent paint?

Unlike ordinary paint, pearlescent paint contains light-reflecting pearl pigments. Thanks to them, the wall never reads as a single flat colour: as daylight, lamplight or your viewing angle changes, glossy and matte areas trade places across the surface. That is the secret behind the "walls that shift with the light" effect.

  • Look: A pearl-like gloss or semi-gloss surface.
  • Pattern: Lines, swirls, waves or a grainy texture, depending on the tool used.
  • Composition: Silkcoat's pearlescent range is pure acrylic and water-based, made for interiors.

Silkcoat's effect paint range includes four core pearlescent products, each with its own texture.

  • Metalico Soft: A washable metallic pearl with a softer sheen.
  • Palace: A grainy pearl effect where the sand particles stay matte while the base stays glossy.

How do you apply pearlescent paint?

Pearlescent paint is applied with the product's own tool onto a prepared, primed surface, and the pattern is worked in before the paint fully dries. Following Silkcoat's application instructions, the shared steps are:

  1. Prepare the surface: Remove all dust, dirt and grease; lightly sand any flaking or previously painted surfaces. Repair imperfections with Akrilik Macun.
  2. Prime: Use Silkcoat İzolac on new and absorbent surfaces, Universal Astar on old, dirty or solvent-based painted surfaces, and Silkcoat Macun Astarı on filled surfaces.
  3. Stir: Mix the paint until smooth and uniform.
  4. Apply according to the product:
    • Pearl: Apply one coat undiluted with a glass trowel, then use the same trowel to create a line or swirl pattern.
    • Metalico: Once the primer is dry, apply two coats with a roller or brush, creating the effect with hand tools in sections of 10-20 m².
    • Metalico Soft: Dilute by 5% with water and apply two coats over Silkomatt with a roller or brush; create the pattern with effect tools before it fully dries.
    • Palace: Pick up the paint with the tip of a brush and apply; as it starts to dry, use a clean, thick brush to gently lift the liquid off the sand particles.
  5. Clean your tools: Wash tools with water immediately after use.

Room and surface temperature must stay between +5 °C and +35 °C throughout application and drying. On freshly plastered surfaces, wait at least 28 days before applying Pearl.

How long does pearlescent paint take to dry?

Silkcoat's pearlescent paints are fully dry in 24 hours. They are touch dry in 25-30 minutes for Pearl and 15-20 minutes for Metalico, Metalico Soft and Palace; all four are dust-free after 1 hour.

Where can you use pearlescent paint?

Pearlescent paint can be used on prepared interior surfaces such as concrete, gypsum plaster, cement render, cement board, glass-fibre wallcovering and paintable wallpaper. Its light-shifting effect really shines in these spaces:

  • Living room and bedroom feature walls: A soft, pearl-like glow in the evening light.
  • Hotel lobbies and restaurants: Metallic surfaces that come alive under spotlights (Metalico, Palace).
  • Shops and showrooms: Eye-catching accent walls in brand-specific colours.
  • Hallways and entrances: Pearl's washable finish is practical in high-traffic areas.

If you'd like to combine pearl sheen with a velvety texture, Velvetto gives a semi-gloss, velvet-like look. You'll find the differences between effect types in our effect paint glossary.
